Paris Plage 2006
Yesterday was the first day of "Paris Plage," the temporary, artificial beach created on the banks of the Seine, thanks to City Hall. This year, according to the news, there are beaches on both sides of the river. The biggest attraction is the new beach on the Left Bank, right by the National Library. Hopefully some of the researchers will be encouraged to go outside, reduce their scholarly pallor, and wiggle their toes in the sand on their lunch breaks!
In addition to sand, palm trees, and "transats" or beach chairs, there is a swimming pool right in the Seine. It is named "Piscine Josephine Baker" and is right by the new pedestrian bridge, the "Passerelle Simone de Beauvoir." (look for a future post about place-names!). Not only that, but there is a water-taxi to shuttle you from one beach to the other if you need a change of scenery.
